Tamati Coffey announces he’s pregnant!

Labour MP and former TVNZ weatherman Tamati Coffey has announced today that he is pregnant and his partner Tim Smith are expecting a baby.

Mr Coffey was at Auckland’s Big Gay Out alongside Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern when he announced the news to cheers and applause.

“I wanted to seize this opportunity, at the biggest gay event in the country right now, to share the news that me and my partner over there are expecting a baby in July! That’s right I am pregnant!” Coffey said.

“I turned 40 as well this year … so I think now is a really good time.”

Ms Ardern said in response: “What better announcement than that?”

The baby was being carried by Coffey, who was 20 weeks pregnant, Mr Coffey told Stuff.

Mr Coffey said that Big Gay Out seemed an appropriate place to make the announcement.

“This is a day where we all come together – all types of people under the rainbow umbrella. We have all kinds of modern families going on and represented here, so I applaud that,” he said.

Mr Coffey and Mr Smith, who had a civil union in 2011, have been together for over 10 years.
